5 Warning Signs Your Diabetes Test Strips Could Be Providing Inaccurate Readings

Managing diabetes relies heavily on accurate blood glucose monitoring. Test strips are a key part of this process, but sometimes they can give misleading results. Inaccurate readings can lead to improper insulin dosing or missed signs of high or low blood sugar, which can be dangerous. Knowing when your test strips might be failing is essential for maintaining good health.

1. Expired or Damaged Test Strips

Test strips have expiration dates for a reason. Using strips past their expiry can cause unreliable results because the chemicals on the strip degrade over time. Also, physical damage like cracks, discoloration, or moisture exposure can affect their accuracy.

How to check:

  • Always verify the expiration date before use.

  • Store strips in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight.

  • Inspect strips for any visible damage or discoloration.

  • Avoid touching the test area on the strip with your fingers.

If you notice any damage or if the strips are expired, discard them immediately and use a fresh batch.

2. Inconsistent Readings Compared to Symptoms

If your blood sugar readings don’t match how you feel, it could be a sign of faulty strips. For example, if your meter shows normal levels but you experience symptoms like dizziness, sweating, or confusion, your strips might be giving false readings.

What to do:

  • Test your blood sugar multiple times to see if results vary widely.

  • Compare readings from different batches of strips.

  • Use a control solution test (available from most manufacturers) to check if the strips and meter work correctly.

  • Consult your healthcare provider if symptoms persist despite normal readings.

3. Meter Error Messages or Unexpected Results

Sometimes the meter itself will alert you to problems with the strips. Error messages like “strip error,” “code error,” or “test failed” often indicate the strip is not working properly or is incompatible with the meter.

Unexpectedly high or low readings without any change in diet or activity can also be a red flag.

Tips:

  • Follow the meter’s instructions carefully when inserting strips.

  • Make sure you are using strips designed for your specific meter model.

  • Clean the meter regularly to prevent contamination.

  • Replace strips if error messages continue.

4. Poor Storage Conditions

Test strips are sensitive to environmental factors. Exposure to humidity, heat, or cold can damage the chemical reagents on the strips, leading to inaccurate results.

Storage guidelines:

  • Keep strips in their original container with the lid tightly closed.

  • Avoid storing strips in the bathroom or kitchen where moisture is high.

  • Do not refrigerate or freeze strips unless the manufacturer specifically says it is safe.

  • Use strips within a few months after opening the container.

If you suspect poor storage, try a new container of strips stored properly and compare results.

5. Using Strips from Different Batches Without Recalibration

Some meters require calibration or coding when switching to a new batch of test strips. Using strips from different batches without recalibrating can cause inaccurate readings.

What to check:

  • Look for a code number on the strip container and enter it into your meter if required.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for batch changes.

  • If your meter is “no coding,” this step may not be necessary, but confirm with your device manual.

  • Keep track of batch numbers and avoid mixing strips from different batches.

Failing to recalibrate can cause readings to be consistently off by several points, which can affect diabetes management decisions.

Accurate blood glucose readings are vital for effective diabetes care. If you notice any of these warning signs, take action by checking your strips, meter, and storage habits. When in doubt, consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist for advice on reliable testing supplies.
